October 11, 2018 – Whether you are taking a shower, washing your clothes or flushing your toilet you are using water. We all know where water comes from, but where does it all go? Join Nevada County’s Wastewater Division of the Public Works Department on Saturday, October 13th, at the Lake Wildwood Wastewater Treatment Plant (12622 Pleasant Valley Road, Penn Valley) for an inside look at how it all happens. The tours begin at 1:00 p.m. and will end around 4:00 p.m. Free food and refreshments will also be provided.
Nevada County Sanitation District handles nearly 1 million gallons of water every day through more than 110 miles of pipe and treats it all at 10 treatment plants in Western Nevada County. This free tour will give a behind-the-scenes look at the processes that make the system so reliable and that keep the environment and Nevada County residents’ safe. From the point that wastewater leaves a home or business and enters the treatment process, follow the water through the treatment process to where it’s released to local creeks and rivers.

Physical Requirements
Expect to be walking on uneven and unpaved ground, climbing stairs and to walk for ¾ of a mile.
Tour Safety
Treatment Plants are functioning industrial sites in operation 24-hours a day, seven days a week. Open pits, moving vehicles and chemicals are just few of the safety hazards present at this site. Sturdy closed-toe shoes are required for your safety and comfort.
Waiver
all visitors must sign a waiver as a condition of the tour; please take a moment to review it. Participants under the age of 18 must have their parent or guardian sign the waiver.
After you’ve completed the tour, you will have a better understanding of the process for treating wastewater, some of the equipment used to maintain the systems, and you will know what actions you can take to maintain the flow of this important utility system in the County.
