Nevada City, Calif. – Nevada County residents living in unincorporated areas are encouraged to apply now for no-cost spay and neuter services for cats and dogs before the current fiscal year ends June 30.

This pilot program is designed to reduce pet overpopulation and support responsible pet ownership across the county. No-cost clinic appointments will be available later this month and in June, but space is limited.
Residents can apply at: www.NevadaCountyCa.gov/spayandneuter. Those who apply will be contacted with clinic locations and appointment details as openings become available.
Appointments are on a first-come, first-served basis.

“People love their pets here, but we have a lot of people who just can’t afford to spay and neuter,” said Board of Supervisors Chair Lisa Swarthout. “This program works to solve a problem, and over time, we should see a difference in our animal population.”
With kitten season approaching, the need is especially urgent. Last year, the Nevada County Animal Shelter took in over 500 kittens. A single pair of unspayed and unneutered cats can produce multiple litters each year, with reproduction beginning as early as four months of age.

“Spaying and neutering doesn’t just help control the pet population—it also supports pets’ long-term health,” said Dr. Julie Brockman, the animal shelter’s veterinarian. “These procedures can often lead to fewer behavioral issues, helping pets live longer, healthier lives with their families.”
More than 275 animals have already been spayed or neutered through the County’s $75,000 pilot program, with additional appointments still available this spring.
