NEVADA CITY, Calif. August 23, 2025 – Local fire departments have upstaffed and activated a task force consisting of four engines and two water tenders, effective from 8:00 am this morning through 8:00 am on Tuesday. Hot and dry conditions will bring elevated fire weather conditions today through Tuesday morning.

Nevada County Consolidated Fire Chief Jason Robitaille states, “With this addition, we will have a total of 19 staffed local government engines and two water tenders available.”

CalOES approved their request, with the additional resources reinforcing the predeployment of 13 fire engines, seven water tenders and two dispatchers in Sierra, Nevada and Plumas counties through Tuesday ahead of expected high temperatures, low humidity and dry lightning.

Locally, the task force consists of:

  • NCC B89
  • Grass Valley OES 4609
  • Ophir Hill E523
  • Higgins B21
  • North San Juan Water Tender 6191
  • Peardale Chicago Park
  • Water Tender 57

The task force has already responded to the Lily incident off Red Dog this morning. Please make it a boring 72-hour shift for them, avoid using equipment that causes sparks, check the chains on trailers and call 911 if you see smoke.
