October 4, 2017 – Robin Milam of Global Alliance on the Rights of Nature, Debra Weistar of Synergia Learning Ventures, and Anya Cooper-Hynell, Eco NU (Nevada Union student and Sierra Club Board member will lead an interactive dialogue with the local Sierra Club envisioning Nevada County as if Rights of Nature were in effect.  Just this year, the legal rights have been recognized for four rivers on three different continents.  The actions are part of a growing global movement recognizing the legal rights of natural ecosystems in local communities throughout the United States and in national constitutions globally.
The public is invited to participate in the Sierra Club’s General Meeting on Thursday October 12.  Join us as we engage in dialogue about what is meant by Rights of Nature and how this growing movement is being implemented around the US and the world.  Explore what Rights of Nature could look like for Nevada County and the Yuba and Bear River watersheds similar to what has been implemented.
The Sierra Nevada Group is a regional unit of the Sierra Club that serves members in Nevada, Yuba and Sierra counties.  Most of our meetings are held in Nevada City/Grass Valley. Our 1100 members are interested in conservation and enjoyment of wilderness and the natural world.  The Group organizes hikes and other outdoor activities; it also provides focused response to environmental issues in the region and is operated entirely by volunteers.
