On Saturday, August 23rd, participate in a treasured local tradition at Empire Mine State Historic Park! From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., visitors are invited to enjoy a picnic lunch on the lush estate grounds, accompanied by live music and performances just like the original Miner’s Picnics over 100 years ago.

The event, which began in 1895 as a benefit for the families of deceased miners, will also have historic children’s games, hard rock mining activities to try your hand at, vintage Model-A cars, and docents in period attire demonstrating the mining equipment. The mine owner’s “cottage” mansion and clubhouse will be open with knowledgeable docents in attendance, and don’t miss the Mine Disaster Rescue Reenactment!

Empire Mine State Historic Park preserves what was once one of the oldest, largest, deepest, longest and richest gold mines in California. The mine was once owned by William Bourn, Jr. who was well-known for funding some of the most intriguing and lavish homes in California. Bourn spared no expense on the beauty of the grounds.  Dedicated restoration and care has resulted in the houses, gardens, reflection pool, fountains and greenhouses looking just as they did in their heyday.

While the park grounds are beautiful and fascinating, the real treasure lies below. Between 1850 and its closure in 1956, the Empire Mine produced 5.8 million ounces of gold, extracted from 367 miles of underground passages. Miner’s Picnic is a perfect opportunity to take a tour and learn more about this unique state park located one mile from downtown Grass Valley.

The park opens at 10:00 a.m., and activities and entertainment begin at 11:00 a.m. Ice cream, pasties, hot dogs and more will be available for purchase, or bring your own lunch. Don’t forget the picnic banket!
