NEVADA CITY, Calif., July 8, 2026 – Nevada City, Truckee and Nevada County have been recognized in the California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection‘s 2026 Fire Risk Reduction Community List (FRRCL) list.

Communities included on the list receive priority consideration for CAL FIRE Wildfire Prevention Grant funding.

“Our community’s dedication and collaboration made this designation possible. It highlights the tremendous effort from both the government and residents and serves as a testament to our path toward resilience. Living in a fire dependent landscape poses unique challenges, but this milestone exemplifies our commitment to overcoming them together,” said Evan McLenithan, Nevada City’s OES Community Outreach Officer.

Councilmember Gary Petersen said, “Making this list is a great example of Nevada City working hard to make our community fire safe and resilient. This rating not only qualifies us to access greater levels of funding, it is also currently the best way to impact the cost of fire insurance. This is City Staff leveraging Measure C funds for the greatest benefit. We are proud to be acknowledged for our work.”

Why this matters

FRRCL lists local governments and special districts located within State Responsibility Areas (SRA) and Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones (VHFHSZ) that meet California’s best practices for local fire planning.

Projects like Woodpecker Ravine, South Yuba Rim Hazardous Fuels Reduction Project and Ponderosa West Grass Valley Defense Zone are in large part funded by CAL FIRE Wildfire Prevention Grants.

In addition, California insurance regulations require insurers to recognize and reflect the Board’s Fire Risk Reduction Community List as a mandatory factor in wildfire risk rating plans, according to the Board of Forestry and Fire Protection. This can be helpful to homeowners on the California Fair plan.
