August 10, 2016 – On August 9th, 2016, at approximately 6:35 PM, the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office received a Medivac request for a Placer County Search and Rescue (SAR)Team member who had been shot in the hip while conducting a search for missing man, Timothy Hansston. Hansston, age 75, from Tulare County, has been missing since August 4th, and was last known to be hiking the South Yuba River out of the Town of Washington.

The Placer County SAR member was searching a very steep portion of the river with two of his team members. Two shots were heard in the canyon, the one member was shot and they all took cover.

Special Enforcement Teams from Placer County and Nevada County were called out as well as medical units. The shooting victim was successfully extricated by CalStar around 10:20 PM and transported to Sutter Roseville Hospital for treatment. The victim is reported to be in stable condition.

The search for the shooter is continuing with the assistance of numerous agencies and equipment. Agencies assisting in the search efforts include Placer County, Grass Valley Police, Yuba County, Butte County, Washoe County, State Parks, CHP, National Guard, and CalFire.

The public should stay out of the river canyon area while the search is being conducted for the shooter. The motive for the shooting is not known at this time and no suspect identification is available.
