Readers sent us a video of Nevada Joint Union High School District Board President Andrew Klein’s remarks at a local GOP event earlier this month. After reviewing the video, we asked Mr. Klein for comment on the video and some of the excerpts. The 8:28-minute video and his response are below.

Mr. Klein’s response to our email:

Those quotes arenโ€™t verbatim, I think youโ€™re missing a few things, you need to make sure itโ€™s accurate, like itโ€™s โ€˜1/1024thโ€™ not 1/124th and โ€˜woke mind virusโ€™ not the โ€˜whine virusโ€™. I could probably send you my script from the night. Obviously the comments were scripted and sometimes hyperbolic in the spirit of the event, meant to troll people on the left.

That was a private event, and I made a lot of jokes at peopleโ€™s expense that werenโ€™t there. I did not know it was being recorded, but it was all in good fun as I played to the conservative crowd and warmed them up for Corrin Rankin, the CAGOP chair.

On a more serious note, I can have political leanings, be outspoken privately about what I believe and still make apolitical decisions at the board level. This is our duty as school board members, to make decisions that are best for students regardless of our political leanings. Thatโ€™s why I recently voted against the slyly named โ€˜Every Student Belongsโ€™ resolution that would feel good in the short term, but could have harmed our students and cut much needed programs.

This is not some groundbreaking news that I am a conservative and donโ€™t like DEI, I straight up said it at the April board meeting – I said โ€œif I made an ideological argument I would lose with this board, so I am arguing the financial aspect of this apoliticallyโ€

I didnโ€™t bring up DEI right after I was elected because when I tried to speak to Ken Johnson about it, we couldnโ€™t agree. So what did I do? Nothing and I was very clear about it.

Iโ€™m proud of being a conservative and standing up for what I believe in. But with the current makeup of the board, apolitical stands are all I can do.

Some of his remarks in the video [punctuation added for clarity]:

  • There’s a lot of uproar in Nevada County right now, but it doesn’t feel like a coordinated political movement, it feels like the last few dying gasps of a movement, feels like the collapse of a mini-USSR. Almost like Marxism can’t work, instead of moving to the middle like any smart political movement after devastating losses, they moved left. They picked Heidi Hall as their champion, I’d like to quickly congratulate Kevin Kylie on his 2026 win.
  • I quickly realized that we had two liberal cult members and one logical liberal and I’d like to give a shout out to Ken the reasonable liberal. He has a heart for students, his entire life has been dedicated to teaching and while we disagree ideologically on a lot of things we’ve been able to work across the aisle for the betterment of the students, that’s awesome. Ken suggested I run for chair and I told him I completely support him in that.
  • I don’t want to let all the secrets back but we have a four-year plan to remake the district, enshrine the moderate policy and remove woke ideology that’s pervasive in our schools.
  • We have not lost a single battle yet. I don’t expect to win every battle, but I do expect to win the war in Nevada County.
  • We can ensure our city boards focus on the well-being of the cities, we can remove the liberal cult’s power over our county with determination and planning. This is what I want to see in Nevada County and California as a whole and if that’s what you want to see I urge you guys to step up run for a seat, donate resources and let’s bring the Golden State back.
