One year ago, I had the privilege of becoming Nevada Countyโ€™s clerk-recorder/registrar of voters. I came to this community with three guiding principles: trust, transparency and service. Today, as I reflect on my first year, I am proud of what our team has accomplished and excited about the work ahead.

Elections are the foundation of our democracy, and public confidence in the electoral process is essential. I believe that confidence is earned through openness, accountability and a commitment to serving every voter.

Over the past year, we have worked to make voting more convenient, provide greater insight into how elections are conducted and modernize our operations. None of these accomplishments would have been possible without the dedication of our Elections staff and the support of our community and county partners.

Making Voting More Accessible

One of my priorities has been to make it easier for Nevada County residents to participate in elections.

For the Nov. 3 General Election, we have nearly doubled the size and number of official ballot drop boxes available 24 hours a day. Nine of our 18 official drop boxes are now accessible around the clock, compared with five during the June Primary. This gives voters more flexibility to return their ballots at a time that works for them.

We have also expanded awareness of Sign, Scan and Go, a service that allows voters to complete their vote-by-mail ballots at home, bring them to a vote center and personally scan them into the voting system.

The response has been encouraging. Use of Sign, Scan and Go nearly tripled between the November 2025 and June 2026 elections. In June, 937 voters โ€” 28.5% of those who voted in person โ€” took advantage of the service.

Opening Our Doors and Building Public Confidence

Transparency is more than a principle. It is something we must demonstrate through our actions.

In May, we welcomed residents to our first Ballot Processing Center Open House, giving the public an opportunity to see firsthand how ballots are processed and counted.

This will be the new normal in Nevada County as we continue to open our doors again Oct. 20, from 4 to 7 p.m., at 12740 Loma Rica Drive in Grass Valley. I encourage residents to attend, meet our Elections team, tour the facility and ask questions.

We have also increased our public communications about the safeguards built into every election, including voting equipment testing before Election Day, post-election audits and the certification process.

During the June Primary, we introduced a new election results portal that makes it easier for residents to find results for individual contests.

I have spoken to any group that has invited me across the political spectrum and have given talks at high schools in Grass Valley and Truckee.

I believe the more people understand how elections work, the more confidence they can have in the process. Our responsibility is not simply to administer elections accurately and securely, but also to help the public understand how we do it.

Reaching More Residents and Engaging the Next Generation

Nevada County is home to residents with different backgrounds, experiences and needs. Our outreach efforts should reflect that diversity.

As someone who is bilingual in English and Spanish, I recognize the importance of reaching voters in the language they are most comfortable using.

This month, we launched a new Spanish-language outreach campaign that includes radio and streaming television advertisements. We also hired a bilingual high school student intern to help us communicate with Spanish-speaking residents.

Our commitment to young people extends beyond language access. We have hired three high school interns representing both the eastern and western portions of the county, giving students an opportunity to learn about elections and public service. This is the first time our department has had interns.

We have also revived our student poll worker program, with plans to hire up to 20 high school students to help administer the Nov. 3 Election. Students age 16 and up are invited to apply by Thursday, Oct. 15 at www.NevadaCountyCa.gov/electionworkers.

I see these efforts as investments in the future. When young people participate in the democratic process, they gain a better understanding of civic responsibility and the important role they can play in their communities.

Modernizing How We Serve the Public

Some of our most important improvements take place behind the scenes. Over the past year, we incorporated GPS tracking into our ballot collection operations, providing another tool to monitor the chain of custody as ballots travel from official drop boxes to our Elections Office.

We will also be onboarding ElectStats, a new resource that will make current and historical Nevada County election results and information easier for the public to access.

Our goal is to give residents direct access to frequently requested election data without requiring them to submit public records requests.

Technology alone does not create trust. But when used thoughtfully, it can improve accountability, increase efficiency and make government more responsive to the people it serves.

Looking Ahead

As I begin my second year, I remain committed to improving voter access, strengthening election administration and making our operations as transparent as possible.

The coming year will also provide an opportunity to focus more attention on the Clerk-Recorderโ€™s Office. With no election currently scheduled for 2027, I look forward to exploring improvements that will make those services more accessible, efficient and responsive to residents. This includes developing a three-year strategic plan for the entire agency to guide our work.

I am grateful to the Nevada County Board of Supervisors, our county partners, election workers, community organizations and the many residents who have supported our efforts, shared feedback and participated in the electoral process.

Most of all, I want to recognize the dedicated employees of both the Elections and Clerk-Recorderโ€™s offices. Their professionalism, expertise and commitment to public service make our accomplishments possible.

We have accomplished a great deal, but there is always more we can do. I look forward to continuing this work with our staff and community to ensure that every eligible voter has the opportunity to participate and every resident can have confidence in the integrity of our elections. Lastly, if youโ€™re a registered voter, please vote in the Nov. 3 Election and, if possible, return your ballot early.

Abriendo nuestras puertas y fortaleciendo la confianza pรบblica

Llegando a mรกs residentes e involucrando a la prรณxima generaciรณn

Algunas de nuestras mejoras mรกs importantes ocurren detrรกs de escena.
