AUBURN, Calif. Placer County Public Health has launched a new sunscreen dispenser pilot program to make sun protection more accessible for residents and visitors during peak summer months. In partnership with the Auburn Recreation District and Auburn State Recreation Area, free public sunscreen dispensers are now installed at two ARD community pools (Sierra Pool and Placer Hills Pool) and near the Confluence Trail entrance. The effort aims to reduce skin cancer risk by encouraging easy, everyday sun safety.
The dispensers provide broad-spectrum SPF sunscreen at no cost, offering a practical way for families, hikers, swimmers and other outdoor enthusiasts to protect themselves while enjoying local recreation areas.
โThis pilot is about meeting people where they are,โ said program coordinator Ashley Pen. โWith the fourth of July holiday coming up, whether youโre heading out for a hike or taking your kids to the pool, it can be easy to forget to pack sunscreen, or costs can be a barrier. Our goal is to make healthy choices easier for everyone.โ
Placer County continues to rank among the top five counties in California for melanoma rates, putting residents at heightened risk as they spend more time outdoors. Melanoma accounts for only about 5% of skin cancer cases but causes most skin cancer-related deaths, making early prevention especially important in communities with high UV exposure.
Placersโ sunny climate, varied elevation and strong outdoor culture contribute to that risk. With an average of 269 sunny days each year and nationally recognized recreation areasโranging from foothill trails to lakefront parks, the county draws residents and visitors who spend significant time in direct sunlight year-round. That consistent exposure increases the likelihood of UV radiation damage, one of the leading causes of skin cancer.
Public Healthโs cancer prevention program launched last year and has focused its early efforts on skin cancer. Find more information and sign up for newsletters at www.placer.ca.gov/CancerPrevention.
