Originally funded by a Nevada County Community Block Grant in 2010, San Juan Ridge Family Resource Center’s SPORTS CAMP has grown into a San Juan Ridge tradition, continuing to provide summer fun for elementary school aged kids who gather for active play on the beautiful Oak Tree School Campus.

This year’s camp leader, Ireland Brown, has been with SPORTS CAMP since 2012; first as a young athlete, then as a teen counselor and now as the coach. Ireland explained, “SPORTS CAMP builds character and gave me opportunities to strive to achieve a healthier lifestyle.” Ably assisted by another SPORTS CAMP alum and teen counselor, Cassius Wondergem, Ireland introduces skills and leads the kids in a wide variety of sports and games.
This year’s SPORTS CAMP was preceded by PLAYCAMP, with three days of songs, stories, arts & crafts, and active play for preschoolers. All San Juan Ridge FRC’s camps, events and activities are governed by three cardinal rules: BE KIND. BE SAFE. HAVE FUN!
The San Juan Ridge Family Resource Center is one of three FRC’s serving families of Nevada county; the other two in Grass Valley and Penn Valley. They provide bi-weekly children’s playgroup for children 0-5 and their parents or caregivers. FRC visitors have access to free food, diapers, clothing, computers, phone and fax, and a children’s lending library. The FRC’s provides classes, activities and events for children and adults throughout the year. To learn more, check out the FRC’s website: https://partnersfamilyresourcecenters.org/
