The Sierra Nevada Group of the Sierra Club announces that our October 13, 2022 program will be presented by filmmaker Gregg Schiffner, as our original presenter Jeff Litton has been called away on business. This event will be held at Seaman’s Lodge Pioneer Park 423 Nimrod Street Nevada City from 6 pm to 8:30 pm.

Stories of the Yuba

Gregg discovered the river as a youth and declared that someday he would do something for the river in return for all that it had done for him. Gregg’s narration is intermixed throughout the film with music by 22 regional musicians. A wide range of styles are featured, there’s avant-garde Jay Sydeman, there’s the Nevada Union Chamber Choir under the baton of Don Baggett, to Dan Scanlan on the ukulele, to country western with Dakota Sid, around each bend of the river as it moves from geography and history through recreation and inspiration.

It concludes with preservation and development up to the point when the film as released in the 1990’s.

Stories of the Yuba starts at the headwaters at Donner Summit, goes to the confluence at Bridgeport, and after traveling through the Central Valley, empties into the Pacific Ocean.

This movie ventures into the hearts and minds of people who know and love this river, who have been enchanted by its beauty and inspired by its magic.

An hour and 15 minutes long, it has won an Award for Excellence from the National Educational Media Network.

The film has not been shown locally in years, and we feel honored that Gregg has offered to ‘re-premier’ his work at our first General Meeting since the beginning of Covid. “This movie was made for the hometown crowd,” Schiffner has said. “They turn out every time. Repeat customers are the ultimate compliment to a filmmaker.”

The meeting will begin with a potluck (please bring your own table service). A sign up will be available for an upcoming CPR and First Aid class. Our meetings are open to all. Suggested donation $10.
