Nevada City, CA – July 10, 2026 – The North Columbia Schoolhouse, owner and protector of the San Juan Ridge Tapestries, invites you to a book release party from 5:30 to 7pm, Thursday July 16th at the Communal Café, 233 Broad Street, Nevada City, CA.

Blue cradle tapestry
The unique thing about this cradle is that, painted on the inside, are the names and birthdates of the 46 babies who have slept in it.

You might have seen a tapestry or two… or twelve over the last few years. They were the subject of the Audience Award-winning film, A Radical Thread, at the 2025 Wild and Scenic Film Festival; they are displayed annually at the Sierra Storytelling Festival; some of the tapestry are currently on exhibit at the Museum of Northern California Art in Chico, CA; and they are designated as a Nevada County Historical Resource. Here is your chance to see what all the commotion is about – close-up.

Twenty years ago, the San Juan Ridge Tapestry Project was conceived to create twelve intricately embroidered tapestries to tell the story of the resettlement of the San Juan Ridge by the back-to-the-land movement. Stitching began, and over the course of the following few years, the concept of a book about the tapestries, the Ridge community, and its environmental justice escapades took form. At long last, that book is now bringing the visual wonder of the tapestries to readers as never seen before. Larger than life, color close-ups showcase the artistry stitched into every square foot of the more than 83-foot-long set of tapestries.

Join Jennifer Rain Crosby, tapestry designer; Jason Danielson, book editor; and Caleb Dardick, contributing writer, for a short program. We will recount the genesis of the project and read a few excerpts from the tales, so closely linked to the imagery of the tapestries.
