Nevada City, CA – At 12:41 p.m. on May 29, 2025, the Nevada County Regional Dispatch Center received a 911 call indicating an unknown subject had a reported firearm near Nevada Union High School (NUHS). Nevada County Sheriff’s Office (NSCO) deputies and police officers of the Grass Valley Police Department (GVPD) immediately responded to the potential threat and detained four persons of interest for questioning. One person was determined not to be related to the incident and was released.
Through the course of the investigation, NCSO deputies determined an altercation had occurred at a private residence located adjacent to NUHS on Ridge Rd. where a male subject, identified as Matthew Anderson, 18, of Olivehurst, reportedly brandished a firearm at an occupant of the residence. Anderson and two juvenile males then fled from the residence on foot. They ran in front of NUHS before crossing the street to Via Vista and ran down Echo Ridge Dr. where they were all detained for questioning.
Anderson was arrested and booked into Wayne Brown Correctional Facility for brandishing the reported firearm; one of the juvenile males (from Sacramento) was also arrested for resisting arrest and booked into Placer County Juvenile Hall. The third juvenile male (Nevada County resident) was determined not to be criminally liable and was released to his parent. None of the involved attend or are known to be affiliated with NUHS.
Extensive efforts are presently underway to locate the reported firearm through a variety of means, including: NCSO K9 Vito, who is trained in firearm detection; the Nevada County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Evidence Detection Team, NCSO drones; aerial support from CHP’s helicopter; as well as additional ground searching by NCSO and GVPD.
Multiple schools in the vicinity were placed on temporary lockdown out of an abundance of caution as the incident unfolded. At no point was there any gunfire or injuries reported.
