Grass Valley, California, June 25, 2024. Despite the warm temperatures this past Saturday, volunteers from United Way of Nevada County (UWNC) completed community projects at four local non-profit organizations to honor United Way’s Worldwide Day of Action.

UWNC volunteers extended the parking area and put together flower boxes for Community Beyond Violence, built a hay shed for Sundance Horse Rescue, cleaned and coated floors at Interfaith Food Ministry, and helped with the landscaping at Gold Country Senior Services new senior center.

In June every year, thousands of people worldwide act to improve their local communities by volunteering with their local United Way. โ€œWe are so lucky to have so many amazing nonprofit organizations in our community and our volunteers are eager to support them however we can,” said Louise Reed, UWNC Executive Director.

UWNC partnered with the Mankind Project (ncal.mkpusa.org) for volunteers at the safe house run by Community Beyond Violence and teamed up with the 49er Rotary of Nevada City (49errotary.org) to clean up the outside of Gold Country Senior Servicesโ€™ brand new Senior Community Center.

BriarPatch Co-op provided coffee and a variety of healthy breakfast treats and Northridge Restaurant Penn Valley provided delicious sandwiches for lunch. โ€œWe are so grateful for the support we get from the community for this project. We even heard that True Value gave a discount on the lumber used for the hay shed. This community is so good at helping each other,โ€ said Reed.

United Way of Nevada County works with partner organizations to identify and fill in gaps in social services to work towards having all community members meet the basic needs of food, health, and clothing. All efforts focus on the residents of Nevada County. Support for these efforts comes from local donors and local volunteers.
