Smoke impacts will be carefully monitored, and efforts will be taken to reduce impacts to communities.

January 31, 2025 at 8:46 AM A Backcountry Avalanche Watch has been issued by the Sierra Avalanche Center and is in effect until 5:15am Saturday, February 1st for the Greater Lake Tahoe Area. Large amounts of rain, snow, and strong winds may cause widespread avalanche activity.

A warm weather system will bring periods of rain, high elevation mountain snow, and breezy southerly winds Friday-Sunday. Snow levels generally above pass levels with moderate impacts expected. Increasing confidence in a third, even colder weather system with possible snow impacts down into the upper foothills. Given dry conditions the last month, widespread flooding impacts are not expected. Expect extended periods of moderate to sometimes heavy rain, significant rises on area waterways, localized flooding in usual trouble spots, and the potential for mud/rock slides in the foothills.

The shelter will open at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday night, January 28th, at the Veterans Hall (lower level), 415 North Pine St. in Nevada City. The shelter will close at 7:30 a.m. Thursday morning.

Crews are working in Altadena searching all structures to ensure they are clear prior to repopulation. Searches are being conducted on foot and via CHP’s helicopter. McIntosh was last seen at Hoyt’s Crossing on Jan. 12, wearing a blue flannel shirt, tan pants, and no shoes. He is described as a 29-year-old Caucasian male, approximately 6’ 0”, 150 lbs. with blue eyes and blond hair. The town hall “Getting through the next fire season” will start at noon and run until 1 pm. Registration is required pretty please. Getting issues in the open without acrimony and sharing what works for your neighborhood can be beneficial to the whole community. There will be no agencies or local government on a panel, it’ll be a community discussion.

He was last seen leaving his residence in Sacramento at 10:12 a.m. on Jan. 11, wearing a dark-colored sweatshirt, dark pants and dark shoes with a light-colored ballcap. January 9, 2025 at 9:49 AM NCSO update: Last night, a deputy on routine patrol attempted to conduct a traffic stop after observing a driver run through two stop signs. Instead of yielding, the driver fled the scene and a pursuit was initiated up Coyote Street to North Bloomfield, at which point the driver parked at a private residence and fled on foot. A perimeter was quickly set up and deputies as well as K9 Odin conducted an extensive search of the area, with added support from Nevada City Police Department and aerial assistance from Placer County Sheriff’s helicopter. While the suspect has yet to be located, the investigation thus far has generated several leads. At this time, the Sheriff’s Office has no reason to believe this suspect poses any threat to the general community. The investigation remains open and ongoing.

January 5, 2025 at 10:53 AM Grass Valley Police Department: Early Morning Incident- 100 Block of West Main Street. Nightshift officers responded to the report of a stumbling male in the downtown area last night around 2:00am. A man matching the description given was located and found to have a significant lower leg laceration. The man informed officers he had injured himself accidentally, however further investigation indicated the man was involved in some sort of physical altercation. The man was transported to the hospital and received treatment. Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact officers by calling (530) 265-7880. You can request to remain anonymous.

No arrests have been made related to this event, and there is at least one involved person still needing to be identified. Grass Valley Police will continue to investigate this incident until there is confidence that a clear understanding of the details has been obtained.

The storm which prompted the warning has weakened below severe limits, and no longer appears capable of producing a tornado. Therefore, the warning will be allowed to expire. City of Nevada City residents (who have three digit addresses) still have clean, green cans. We are not part of the mixed organics program that Waste Management operates. Our green waste cans collection is a separate route, and the green waste is not co-mingled with food waste,” according to Assistant City Manager Lon Peterson.

January 2, 2025 at 10:40 AM From reader Larry: A medium size whitish female German Shepherd mix came up our driveway at the top of North Auburn street around 6 AM this morning. She had a tri-color collar but no identification. She is very friendly and stayed in our fenced front yard until she was picked up by GV Animal Control just before 8 AM and taken to the shelter. The officer said they would post a picture of her on their Facebook page.

January 2, 2025 at 10:22 AM Fun fact about the upcoming food waste changes. Saw a pickup truck with shiny new green waste bins drive down the road. Truck stops at the neighbor’s house, WM guy gets out and asks if they want an organics bin. Neighbor declines (we have to take the cans to a community spot) and WM guy gets back in the truck. Waiting for him to come up our driveway, but he drives back up the road with his 64-gallon organics containers. Hmm.
