NEVADA CITY, California, March 9, 2020 – While formal botanical gardens top the list of gardens of “Must-See” Gardens in California, the Sierra Nevada holds a golden nugget for those who love springtime and flowers, especially, tulips.

Ananda’s Crystal Hermitage Garden near Nevada City, California showcases over 17,000 tulips each spring. Nevada City also offers a self-guided Walking Tree Tour, with many blooming trees, making for a perfect spring outing. Free Tree Tour maps at http://bit.ly/39ZVfiv. Crystal Hermitage in Ananda Village, about 90 minutes from downtown Sacramento is a meticulously planted private garden open to the public during tulip season. Ananda itself is a Retreat Center based on the teachings of Paramhansa Yogananada and Kriyananda. Ananda Village is comprised of over 700 acres of beautiful rolling meadows and forestland in the Sierra Nevada foothills and includes several temples, a Retreat Center, a small organic market and gift store, but the jewel in the crown is perhaps the Crystal Hermitage garden, which is planted with 17,000 tulips and other spring flowers.  Just 25 minutes above Nevada City proper, this beautiful, pristine and lovingly attended garden is well worth the drive.

The Crystal Hermitage Garden provides a rare view across the wild and scenic Yuba River canyon far below this refined garden, bursting with color and sequentially planted throughout the spring with many other contrasting flowers. As lovely as tulips are by themselves, somehow when they bloom out of a bed of Forget-me-Knots, it seems even more spectacular. Wherever the eye falls, the attention to detail and care shines through in this treasured, though perhaps lesser-known garden—each year, however, many thousands make the trip to soak in the stellar beauty of nature tamed so tenderly by gentle gardeners’ hands and contrasting with the wildlands nearby.

Come for the tulips, then visit historic downtown Nevada City for a meal, a bit more history, or if you wish, take the Nevada City Walking tree tour, with many trees in bloom or newly leafed out during April and May.
