March 12, 2021 – Nevada Irrigation District (NID) is proud to be joining other WaterSense partners in participating in this year’s Fix-A-Leak Week, running from March 15 – 21. This is an annual awareness campaign organized by the US Environmental Protection Agency to show the public the massive amounts of water waste caused by ordinary household leaks such as running toilets and leaky faucets. These small leaks add up to a huge amount of wasted water.

  • Experts estimate that nearly 1 trillion gallons of water is lost to household leaks each year in the U.S.A.
  • The average household leaks nearly 10,000 gallons of water per year, or the amount of water it takes to wash 300 loads of laundry
  • A showerhead leaking at 10 drips per minute wastes more than 500 gallons per year. That’s the amount of water needed to take more than 180 showers
  • An irrigation system with a leak only 1/32nd of an inch in diameter – the thickness of a dime — can waste 6,300 gallons of water per month.

NID encourages all customers to get involved and check their home for leaks. For information on how to track down leaks, please check out the following resources:
