This is the first in a series of burns planned for Spring 2025.  These burns will be specifically targeting Scotch Broom which has dominated a large section of the school property since the Lobo Fire in 2017. In addition, there is an educational component with the goal of providing hands-on training for the CHIRP land stewardship crew. These burns will have an emphasis on cultural elements of burning, and act as a reconnection point for the Nevada City Rancheria, while improving the health diversity of this landscape.

April 1, 2025 at 3:12 PM THE TORNADO WARNING FOR CENTRAL YUBA AND WEST CENTRAL NEVADA COUNTIES WILL EXPIRE AT 3:15 pm. The storm which prompted the warning has weakened below severe limits, and no longer appears capable of producing a tornado. Therefore, the warning will be allowed to expire. However small hail, funnel clouds, and gusty winds are still possible with this thunderstorm, and a Special Weather Statement remains in effect through 400 PM PDT.

April 1, 2025 at 2:53 PM A TORNADO WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 315 PM PDT FOR CENTRAL YUBA AND WEST CENTRAL NEVADA COUNTIES. At 252 PM PDT, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located near Dobbins, or 9 miles northwest of Grass Valley, moving east at 15 mph. Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur. Tree damage is likely. This dangerous storm will be near Sweetland, Delevan National Wildlife Refuge, and Dobbins around 255 PM PDT. Other locations impacted by this tornadic thunderstorm include Nevada City and Loma Rica.

April 1, 2025 at 2:25 PM Tornado Warning for Central Yuba County in central California and West central Nevada County in northern California until 3:15 pm. At 224 PM PDT, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located near Timbuctoo, or 14 miles west of Grass Valley, moving east at 15 mph.

This dangerous storm will be near Lake Wildwood around 240 PM PDT. Sweetland, Delevan National Wildlife Refuge, and Dobbins around 255 PM.
Other locations impacted by this tornadic thunderstorm include Loma Rica, Nevada City, and Penn Valley.

April 1, 2025 at 2:16 PM At 214 PM PDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm near Timbuctoo, or 13 miles west of Grass Valley, moving east at 30 mph. Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation is possible. Locations impacted include Stanfield Hill, Sweetland, Lake Wildwood, Smartville, Delevan National Wildlife Refuge, Oregon House, Penn Valley, Dobbins, Timbuctoo, Grass Valley, Rough And Ready, Nevada City, Loma Rica, Frenchtown, and Cedar Ridge.

Wind gusts up to 40 mph and pea size hail. Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation is possible. Locations impacted include Meadow Vista, Alta Sierra, Lake Of The Pines, Applegate, Higgins Corner, North Auburn, and Auburn.

April 1, 2025 at 1:22 PM At 1:20 pm, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm over Sheridan, or 11 miles northwest of Rocklin, moving east at 30 mph. Wind gusts up to 40 mph and pea size hail. Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation is possible. Locations impacted include Sheridan, Lincoln, Auburn, and North Auburn.

April 1, 2025 at 12:33 PM Hwy 49 at Newtown Road, traffic is being held. Hwy 49 is closed between Newtown Road and Marysville Road in Camptonville, no estimated time of reopening. Hwy 20 is closed at Nevada Street.

For maximum smoke dispersion, please burn between 9 AM โ€“ 3 PM. Burn only dry, natural vegetation that grew on the property where you are burning.  Never burn garbage, construction debris, painted wood, wet piles, or piles composed primarily of leaves and pine needles. Burning is always prohibited inside the city limits of Nevada City and Grass Valley.
