July 24, 2024 at 9:22 AM If you want better connectivity, but the CPUC’s questions seem daunting, here’s an update from Nevada County:

In order for future broadband funding to go where it is needed most, Nevada County needs residentsโ€™ help to determine whether the current broadband map accurately reflects service at their home or business.

By July 31, residents with slow or no internet should follow these three easy steps:

  1. Visit the Consumer Challenge Map website and enter an address.
  2. Check broadband availability. Does the map show internet service is available where there isnโ€™t any?  If there is service, does the map accurately show the speeds received?
  3. If the information is incorrect, submit evidence through the website. The evidence will go to an organization that can submit a challenge to the data.

In-person support to walk through the steps above is available today, Wednesday, July 24, from 4-6 p.m. at the Madelyn Helling Library, 980 Helling Way, Nevada City. Residents can also reach out to 1-888-920-2762 or broadband@nevadacountyca.gov for assistance.

Thompson fire 070224

July 2, 2024 at 10:12 AM Not much cooling overnight for our area, we are in the thermal belt zone. Thanks to NWS Sacramento meteorologist Katrina Hand for this explainer: We often see thermal belts developing overnight in the foothill areas (between the Central Valley and surrounding Sierra/Coast range) that keep temperatures a bit warmer. A thermal belt is a zone of high nighttime temperatures (and relatively low humidities) that is often experienced within a narrow altitude range on valley sidewalls, especially evident during clear weather with light winds which would be expected as high pressure builds over the region this week-weekend.

Warmer overnight lows in the Foothills

July 2, 2024 at 9:48 AM Widespread Major to Extreme HeatRisk into next week. Widespread Major to Extreme HeatRisk into next week with triple digit temperatures and very warm overnight lows. Critical fire weather conditions in the Sacramento Valley through Wednesday from gusty northerly winds and low humidity. High likelihood that excessive heat will continue into the middle of next week.

Some context from NWS Sacramento:

Unusual to see heat of this magnitude early in July – temperatures are forecast to be 10-20 degrees above normal.

  • Potential for a few daily records, all-time July records, consecutive days above 100ยฐ, 105ยฐ to be broken
  • Rare to see multiple days of magenta HeatRisk in a row – historical data shows a few climate sites have hit 2-4 days in a row once or twice in last decade (most recently September 2022 heatwave)
    • Annual average # of magenta days since 2005 across our area is 0-1
  • Last comparable 4th of July heatwave was in 2013

July 1, 2024 at 7:52 PM Right on time for the heatwave, Reader Joe is sharing this recipe for a cool treat for your pups. Shredded carrots and cooked chicken in low sodium chicken broth, placed in Dixie cups and freeze. Reader Carol adds this caveat: “Dogs can have chicken broth as long as it doesnโ€™t contain any harmful added ingredients. But onion and garlic are both common additives found in canned chicken broth andโ€”againโ€”these are toxic to dogs. But plain, low-sodium chicken broth (or homemade broth!) can make a nice addition in their dog food bowl when given in small amounts.”
