August 29, 2024 at 9:53 PM Got to walk in and around CAL FIRE’s new C-130H tanker today. That plane is huge, and fast! Despite its size, the C-130H will be used in initial attack operations throughout the state once the full fleet comes online. Tanker 122 is based at McClellan where CAL FIRE’s Aviation headquarters are. The tanker carries 4,000 gallons of retardant, compared to the max. 1,200 gallons S-2 tankers (like Tankers 88 and 89 out of Grass Valley) carry. Full story and more photos here.
August 29, 2024 at 6:33 PM An update on the car fire at Western Gateway Park. The fire was “extinguished by locals,” as reported by the Penn IC. Ryan Horsfall, an arborist for ACRT, was the local. He spoke to us about the incident. “I was getting ready to wrap up the day when I saw this car with flames under the hood. It was driving by slowly, so I had the time to grab my fire extinguisher and wave the car over to the parking lot. The driver was a senior, unaware her car had caught fire. I got her out of the car, popped the hood and started spraying the engine.” Ryan added he was glad to help. We’re glad Joanne let us know about his actions.

August 28, 2024 at 12:07 PM The Board of Supervisors has selected Red Dog Road in the unincorporated area of Nevada City as the preferred site for PG&E to move electrical wires underground. Today, at 6:00 p.m. in the Board chambers at the Rood Center there will be an informational meeting. Some background: County staff recommended Red Dog Road because it is an important route used by residents in the greater Cascade Shores area, one of unincorporated Nevada County’s most vulnerable communities if evacuated for a wildfire. August 27, 2024 at 2:54 PM According to Sam Goodspeed with Grass Valley/Nevada City Fire, a total of four people were transported to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital as a precautionary measure – two civilians and two firefighters. The road closures remain in place: West Main between Mill and Alta and South Church between West Main and neal Street. Parents picking up students at nearby schools are advised to use Ridge Road to leave the area. At the height of the fire, 42 firefighters were assigned, plus numerous medics.
