Dry weather is expected for the early portion of this morning, with precipitation chances increasing throughout the day. Snow levels are forecast to be around 4000-5000 with accumulating snow expected at pass level. Elsewhere, expect rain showers with dry weather returning late tonight.

December 28, 2019 at 6:53 PM Multi-car accident at the intersection of Bell Road and Hwy 49 in Auburn. Traffic is at a standstill, use an alternate route if possible. Emergency services are on scene.

December 28, 2019 at 10:21 AM An area of low pressure will move into northern California on Sunday bringing periods of showers to the region. Minor travel impacts are possible over the mountains with light to locally moderate snow falling below pass level. The system eventually exits to the south with precipitation ending early Monday morning over the higher terrain and areas south of Highway 50. Breezy north winds are likely Monday in the wake of this system with dry weather into the new year accompanied by a gradual warm up.

December 19, 2019 at 10:56 AM NWS update: Light showers continue over the northern Sacramento Valley and mountains today north of I-80, slowly tapering off overnight. A wetter weather system is forecast to impact holiday travel this weekend. This storm has been trending slower, and precipitation is now expected to slowly move from northwest to southeast throughout Saturday. Snow will begin Saturday morning for the Coastal Range and southern Cascades, but now it is not expected to reach the northern Sierra passes along I-80 and Highway 50 until the early hours of Sunday morning. Periods of moderate mountain snow and Valley rain are possible Saturday through Monday. Heaviest precipitation will be Sunday morning through the evening, with showers continuing through Monday. Looking at next week, there is a chance of another winter storm impacting NorCal Wednesday (Christmas Day) and Thursday. However, confidence is very low on timing and strength at this time.

Very light mountain snow may bring slick roads and possible chain controls to the mountains tonight. A second system arrives Thursday through Saturday evening bringing more widespread precipitation chances to northern California. Any rain or snow stays mainly north of I-80 Thursday with high snow levels mitigating travel impacts. Snow levels fall by late Friday to near pass level and continue to drop into Saturday morning, possibly with minor accumulations seen down to around 4000 feet. Snow amounts will be lighter than past storms with total amounts from a couple inches to up to a foot at the highest peaks. There may be some travel concerns Friday night into Saturday due to the snowfall. Dry weather returns Sunday into early next week.

TIMING: In effect from Sun 07:15 PST to Mon 07:00 PST.

AFFECTED AREA: Central Sierra Nevada Mountains between Yuba Pass (Hwy 49) on the north and Ebbetts Pass (Hwy 4) on the south, including the greater Lake Tahoe area.

AVALANCHE DANGER: HIGH avalanche danger exists in the mountains.

REASON/IMPACTS: Warming temperatures, intense snow and rain, and strong winds have resulted in dangerous avalanche conditions. The backcountry will hold a complex mix of wind slab, storm slab, and loose wet avalanche problems. Natural avalanches and human-triggered avalanches are expected. Some avalanches may be large and destructive.
