May or May Not have collar on (Loses several a week) Petey is very social and may have decided that my house sitter was not worshiping him enough. He disappeared in the last week. If youโ€™ve sighted him, please call me at (916) 549-3546. The house is too quiet without him.

February 25, 2025 at 5:55 PM An update from Police Chief Dan Foss:

At approximately 1:30 PM on today’s date, Officers and emergency services responded to 170 Ridge Road in response to a vehicle fire with one person suffering from burns. When officers arrived on the scene, they found a small sedan fully engulfed in flames and a young male child under the age of five nearby with extensive burns throughout his body. According to a preliminary investigation, the child was seated in a car seat in the rear of the vehicle when a fire broke out in the passenger compartment of the car. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. The mother and a passerby were able to pull the child from the vehicle before police arrival. The child was med-flighted to UC Davis Medical Center for treatment. He is currently in critical condition. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

February 25, 2025 at 4:00 PM Grass Valley/Nevada City Fire released the following information about the car fire at Cashin’s Field:

This afternoon around 1:30 pm the Grass Valley / Nevada City Fire Department was dispatched to 170 Ridge Rd in Nevada City, Ca for a reported vehicle fire with the possibility of a child inside the vehicle.  Our crews arrived at scene and confirmed that they had a working vehicle fire and one child with injuries from the fire was located.  The patient was transported by ground to a Landing Zone where the patient was transported to a waiting medical helicopter.  The helicopter transported the patient to a local burn center for treatment.  Currently the patients age and condition will not be released.  The Nevada City Police Department is the lead agency handling the investigation and any further details will be provided by them as they become available.  This is an extremely tragic event; our hearts go out to the patient and their family and we are all hoping for a fast recovery.

February 25, 2025 at 2:00 PM Car fire at Cashin’s Field in Nevada City. A large emergency response quickly contained the passenger vehicle fire. According to Nevada City Police Chief Dan Foss, a call to 911 alerted emergency services to the incident. The fire appears to have started in the carโ€™s cabin – but this is just a preliminary report. A small child was reportedly in the car when the fire started and rescued by a civilian. Unfortunately, the child was injured and has been transported by medics. There will be a large law enforcement and fire response in the area while the investigation is proceeding. The augmented fire response was due to the multi-family environment. No other injuries have been reported at this time and all residents can return to their home.

February 3, 2025 at 1:41 PM The message from NU Principal, Kelly Rhoden:

Dear Parents and Staff,
As of 1:00 PM, Nevada Union High School has lifted the shelter in place. All students and staff have been released to go to lunch. Law Enforcement was able to process all concerns that came forward through rumors and social media. Again, this threat occurred this morning due to a social media post. Despite rumors, there were no weapons involved and all students and staff are safe.

Social media rumors create challenges as we work through these situations. Students and staff were safe throughout this process, but I do realize these situations cause fear and anxiety. Please have students reach out to their school counselor or other staff adults for support as needed. We have many resources and supports on campus to address students and staff in need. I would like to give a huge thank you and appreciation to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Department for their response, diligence, and professionalism in this situation.

Thank you for your patience.

An NCSO K9 trained in firearms detection has been brought to the school as well. At this time, NO firearms or weapons have been located and there are no known additional threats. This remains an active and ongoing investigation, and we ask that the public please refer to official sources of information and resist the temptation to share misinformation or rumors. We are working closely with school officials, and any lockdowns implemented have been out an abundance of caution while the investigation is underway.

February 3, 2025 at 1:00 PM The lockdown at NU is being lifted. We will bring you additional details once we confirm the facts.
