Lower Colfax, Laws Ranch Cross, Burma, and Rattlesnake are open. @PGE_SactoSierra, @CALFIRENEU, @NevCoOES & Roads personnel task force allowed for the quick removal of downed trees with PG&E lines in them yesterday. AT&T is embedded in today’s task force to address trees that have telecommunications lines in them. December 30, 2021 at 5:00 PM: California Governor Newsom declared a state of emergency in Alameda, Amador, Calaveras, El Dorado, Humboldt, Lake, Los Angeles, Marin, Monterey, Napa, Nevada, Orange, Placer, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, Sierra, and Yuba counties due to these winter storms.

December 30, 2021 at 4:40 PM State of emergency continues in Nevada County – Dec. 30 update. Day 4 after the start of the winter storm that devastated a large portion of Nevada County, among other Sierra Nevada counties. Roads are still impassable due to down trees and power lines, no power for 17,437 utility power customers, no phone or internet for thousands, no heat and problems getting food, water and medications. On the other hand, a declared local emergency, a task force of local, state and utility crews, hundreds of first responders, public works, local government staff and residents of the community helping each other. Where are we at?

December 28, 2021 at 5:56 PM Progress update: 126 outages affecting 23,128 customers in Nevada County, close to 5,000 restorations since this morning. Estimated restoration time for a few of the remaining outages have been posted by PG&E:

  • 1,326 customers on a circuit that runs from the Glenbrook Basin north towards Cement Hill, Purdon Road, Rector Road and Hudson Way. Estimated time of restoration is 10:00 pm tonight.
  • 1,147 customers along Red Dog Road to Cascade Shores. Estimated time of restoration is 10:00 pm tonight.

December 28, 2021 at 4:46 PM Snow continues into Wednesday, significant winter storm possible early next week. Light rain and snow showers continue through the afternoon. Moderate to heavy snow is forecast over the mountains tonight and Wednesday with a second weather system. A dusting of snow is possible in the northern Sacramento Valley overnight. Snowfall accumulations are also expected in the foothills. Cold but drier weather is expected later in the week.

Considering the weather prediction and widespread power outages, Nevada County and Sierra Roots are activating the Extreme Weather Shelter Protocol for tonight, Monday night, with COVID-19 safety measures in place.

The County is opening two shelters in Nevada City at the Madelyn Helling Library Community Room and the lower level of the Nevada City Veterans Hall. The shelters open at 4:30 p.m. and will close at 7:30 a.m. This is a collaborative effort to temporarily shelter residents severely impacted by the current storms and our vulnerable homeless residents.

The shelter is currently open and will close at 7:30 a.m.

December 9, 2021 at 12:48 PM CAL FIRE/Placer County Fire are implementing a live fire operation at CAL FIRE Station 33, located at 33752 Alta Forestry Road in Alta. The burn started around 9:00 a.m. and be completed by 3:00 p.m. Smoke will be visible from Interstate 80 in the Alta/Dutch Flat area and surrounding communities. Resources will remain at scene until all fire is extinguished and continue to check the burn for several days following the project’s completion.

December 7, 2021 at 7:55 AM The Tahoe National Forest will conduct a prescribed fire two miles southwest of White Cloud on the Burlington Ridge Rd. The plan is to burn 29 acres. Additionally, North Yuba will be burning piles in Yuba Aspen Units A,B,100,65 and 80 for a total of 88 acres. All units are on the 09 Rd, near Gold Lake Highway and Yuba Pass. Ignitions will begin today, the 7th, and continue through Thursday.

December 3, 2021 at 2:18 PM A brief update on the coroner’s investigation into the suspicious death of an unidentified man found near the Spenceville Wildlife Area last week. The decedent has been identified as 60-year-old Robert Mendoza of Lincoln, Ca. The death is being investigated as a homicide. The results of the autopsy remain pending and the investigation is active and ongoing.
