A brief period of dry weather is forecast today through most of tomorrow (New Year’s Day) before multiple rounds of widespread precipitation chances return beginning late tomorrow into next week. A weak weather system is expected to bring light mountain snow and minimal Valley rain late tomorrow night – Saturday, with scattered showers lingering through the day Saturday and Sunday. Significant snowfall is possible over mountain passes Sunday evening through Monday as a stronger winter storm impacts NorCal. December 27, 2020 at 9:57 AM Rain and snow showers return tonight with lower snow levels. Dry weather is expected for much of the day today with light showers beginning to move into the area from the south late this evening. Light showers will continue for the overnight with the chances staying below highway 32 and the best chances staying south of I-80. Snow levels will be lower with this system in the 3500-4000 foot range and some light snow accumulations will be possible down to 3500 feet by tomorrow morning. Dry weather settles back in by Monday evening and we will remain dry into the middle part of the week. Another system will bring light rain and snow showers for the second half of Wednesday into early Thursday. Snow levels will be low with this system also but amounts are looking to remain very light with this system. New Year’s Day is looking to be dry but we are keeping an eye on the potential for a wetter system for next weekend.

Vaccine update

Nevada County is following the vaccine allocation guidelines developed by the California Department of Public Health. The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has developed tiers and levels within those tiers. CDPH continues to define/clarify who is included in which phases and tiers. Nevada County’s first doses are going to front-line health care workers at our two hospitals. Congregate care settings such as Skilled Nursing Facilities and Assisted Living Facilities are also prioritized in Phase 1A, Tier 1, and Nevada County’s facilities have enrolled in the CDC’s Long Term Care Facility (LTCF) Pharmacy Partnership Program to receive vaccine. The vaccine allocation for this program is separate from the allocation coming directly to our county.

December 17, 2020 at 8:36 AM Lingering mountain showers today. Valley showers are pushing out of the area this morning, and we are seeing lingering showers over the mountains. The majority of the mountain showers will diminish by 10 am, but a few showers will linger into the early afternoon over the Sierra mainly I-80 south. North winds will develop this afternoon and continue into the overnight. They are not expected to be strong but they will bring a challenge to the fog forecast for Friday morning. Best chances for dense fog will be in the San Joaquin Valley east of I-5 with fog expected to be more patchy over the southern Sacramento Valley. With less wind Saturday morning fog will likely be more widespread across portions of the Sacramento Valley into the San Joaquin Valley. Dry weather will continue into the weekend and for Monday. Today, the goal is to finish the remaining 11 acres of handpiles between Quaker Hill Road and Sailor Flat. Firefighters will remain on site until the piles are out, there is no need to report the smoke visible in the Cascade Shores area.

An additional 56 confirmed positive cases bring the total to 2,123 cases. 34 of the newly reported cases are in western Nevada County, 22 on the east side. The death toll has increased to 32. 80 health care workers in three facilities have tested positive. Several local facilities, in coordination with Public Health, have reached out to the state for assistance with staffing and resources. For context, 6 out of 22 first responders/staff of Grass Valley/Nevada City Fire Department and 11 out of 864 County of Nevada staff tested positive since the start of the pandemic.

Smoke may settle into the Martis Valley area or other lower elevation areas at night and into the morning as cool air sinks, but will clear out as daytime temperatures rise. Approximately 50 acres are slated for today. Firefighters will be on scene and the piles will be monitored until completely extinguished. There is no need to report the smoke.

December 15, 2020 at 8:18 AM Widespread rain, mountain snow, and travel impacts Wednesday. Clouds are beginning to move over Northern California this morning as a weak weather system moves across the northern half of the forecast area today. A few scattered showers will be possible today, mainly across the surrounding mountains and foothills of the northern Sacramento Valley, although a stray Valley shower cannot be ruled out. The main focus will be on an impactful winter storm which will affect all of NorCal tomorrow into Thursday. Widespread rain and mountain snow are expected, with the heaviest precipitation in the evening and overnight hours. Snow levels begin near the high pass levels with the onset of precipitation, lowering to 4500 to 5000 feet by Thursday. A Winter Storm Watch continues for over 5500 feet, where the heaviest snow is expected to fall. Hazardous mountain travel is anticipated during this time. The system clears out Thursday evening and dry weather returns on Friday. Mainly dry weather for the weekend although a few showers may be seen in the northern mountains on Sunday.

December 14, 2020 at 8:20 AM Dense Valley Fog this morning – rain, mountain snow, and travel impacts return mid-week. Dense Valley fog is seen this morning mainly in the central Sacramento Valley with visibilities ranging from one mile down to a quarter of a mile. Fog is expected to dissipate by mid-morning with dry weather and cool temperatures seen today. A passing system to the north may bring some scattered showers to the mountains surrounding the northern Sacramento Valley on Tuesday, otherwise dry weather will continue for much of the area this day. Today, 17 active hospitalizations, with 3 patients in ICU. 63 new confirmed cases yesterday, for a total of 1,517. Four of these deaths are related to COVID-19 outbreaks in local skilled nursing facilities and elderly residents who lived there, and the other was an older adult not affiliated with a skilled nursing facility. Another death was reported earlier this week, bringing our County’s total deaths due to COVID-19 to fifteen.
