January 4, 2023 at 11:30 AM Cal OES briefing underway ahead of the brunt of this storm. “Stay home if you can and stay off the roads as much as possible,” is a key point, with the usual storm preparation and warnings.

January 4, 2023 at 10:30 AM CodeRED message from Nevada County (sent via email only):

This is the Nevada County Office of Emergency Services. The National Weather Service is forecasting an intense winter storm that will likely bring damaging winds, heavy rain, mountain snow and flooding beginning today (Wednesday the 4th) thru Thursday evening. This storm will be followed by another system this weekend. Be prepared for intense rain, local area flooding, winds up to 70 mph that may drive trees into power lines and across roads. Please plan for wide area power outages and interruptions to communication systems.

Recommendations:

  • ·         Fuel up your personal vehicle and make sure you have fuel for your generator
  • ·         Check on your neighbors
  • ·         Stay tuned to trusted news sources (OES, KNCO, KVMR, Yubanet, National Weather Service, The Union)

  • ·         Charge your cell phone, tablet, laptop, etc.
  • ·         Avoid flooded roads, and never try to drive across a flooded road
  • ·         Be aware of flooding concerns along waterways and low lying areas.
  • ·         Avoid the River Fire burn scar as there is a potential for debris flow in this area
  • ·         Secure household items that may blow away in high winds
  • ·         Use sandbags to mitigate flooding on your property.  The county of Nevada has no cost sandbags at four sites listed here: Sand & Sandbags Available | Nevada County, CA (nevadacountyca.gov)
  • ·         Report down trees or flooding on County maintained roads at www.NevadaCountyCA.gov/ServiceRequest for by calling (530) 265-1411

The power of water is deceiving, and the trip could cause death or injury to you or the ones attempting to get you out of trouble. Be safe and turn around.

According to the Library of Congress website, “A red sunrise can mean that a high pressure system (good weather) has already passed, thus indicating that a storm system (low pressure) may be moving to the east. A morning sky that is a deep, fiery red can indicate that there is high water content in the atmosphere. So, rain could be on its way.” Looking at today’s weather forecast, we agree.
