February 16, 2021 at 5:00 PM From NID: The Nevada Irrigation District is celebrating its 100th year of operation. As part of the celebration, we are launching a blog on our new website. Throughout the year, we will explore the intricacies of how water gets to you. It is an enormous effort. Our blog will tell the story, and also spotlight the men and women who work hard to make sure when you turn on the tap or crank a valve, the water flows.

Our latest blog entry answers the question: why do we weigh the snow during surveys? The answer: it helps us determine how much water will be available to users later in the year. During routine snow sampling, NID surveyors measure the snow for depth, but they also weigh the snow to determine how much water is in it. Water managers then use the measurement to know how much water the snowpack will yield when it melts. That’s what determines the water availability for the year. Check out the blog here.
