July 29, 2017 at 2:52 PM At 229 PM PDT, National Weather Service meteorologists were tracking a cluster of developing thunderstorms near the Tahoe Basin and Pine Nut Range in western Nevada. The strongest storm so far has produced quarter sized hail, frequent lightning and blinding downpours. These conditions can be expected with other storms that strengthen along with outflow winds of 40 to 45 mph. These storms are moving northward around 10 mph. Lake Tahoe could also see the potential for showers and storms through the early evening. Those out on the lake waters should closely monitor the weather and seek safe harbor. Locations impacted include: Northern Sierra near the Tahoe Basin and extending into the Sierra valley. The Pine Nut Range extending through the Sierra Front including Reno, Sparks, Carson City, Minden and Gardnerville.

July 23, 2017 at 8:55 AM One more hot day – with possible dry lightning on the east side of the Sierra. Another hot day today especially northern Sacramento valley and surrounding foothills. A slight threat of afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Cascade crest through early this week spreading northward into Shasta county Tuesday. Cooler temperatures Monday and Tuesday with a slow warming mid to late week. Heat Advisory until 9 PM this evening.

A Red Flag Warning has been issued for Sunday for the threat of new fire starts from dry lightning strikes. Moisture will filter into the region Sunday which will allow for a scattered mix of wet and dry thunderstorms Sunday afternoon and evening. Any dry lightning strikes will cause new wildfires in the area. Gusty outflow winds up to 50 to 60 mph are possible in the vicinity of these storms. New fire starts may combine with strong outflow wind gusts to cause fires to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them.

July 11, 2017 at 8:23 PM Update from PG&E’s spokesperson Brandi Merlo: The safety of our customers, employees and contractors is PG&E’s top priority. Today (July 11), a helicopter conducting a FERC inspection of PG&E hydro facilities rolled upon landing near Kidd Lake in Placer County.

All passengers involved are fine, with only minor injuries reported.

PG&E has made the appropriate notifications of the incident and is working with local first responders and investigators. As in any event like this involving an aircraft incident, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have been notified.

The 14-year-old boy was safely retrieved from the water but the 11-year-old was not seen again after briefly re-surfacing immediately following the capsizing. Public access to Stampede Reservoir will be prohibited until the recovery is made.

July 9, 2017 at 9:15 AM Sierra County Sheriff: At approximately 4:30am this morning our office received a report of a directed (not random) home robbery having taken place in eastern Sierra County. There were no injuries reported but there were several weapons and ammunition stolen from the residence. July 6, 2017 at 1:13 PM NWS Reno: As you may know, there are several ongoing wildfires in the Reno/Sparks area and emergency crews are working hard to put them out. This is a summary of results updated this morning of all four fires as of now. So far, a total of roughly 115,000 acres have burned within the area already with that number expected to climb through the weekend. Smoky/hazy conditions should continue through the end of the week with possible isolated thunderstorms throughout the region.
